On this episode of In The KNOW, host David Winstead talks with Maryland State Senator Jeff Waldstreicher about the 2023 legislative session among other issues that affect Montgomery County municipalities. Senator Waldstreicher represents District 18 which includes 8 of the 18 Montgomery County municipalities.
The Senator was born in Silver Spring and graduated from Montgomery Blair High School. He earned his JD in 2003 and served as a member of the House of Delegates from 2007 to 2019 after which he assumed his role in the Maryland State Senate.
Senator Waldstreicher was recently awarded a perfect score on the 2023 Maryland Legislative Coalition Scorecard. This annual scorecard recognizes legislators who are committed to improving the lives of all Marylanders in the areas of education, environment, ethics/elections, gun control, health care, transportation, and social and economic justice. This was the fifth consecutive year the Senator has recieved straight A’s on the MLC Scorecard which also showed he sponsored the most progressive bills (8) in the Senate this year.
During the interview he discusses Senate Bill 1, the Gun Safety Act of 2023 which is part of a larger 3 bill package, how he helped get the right to reproductive freedom added as an option on the 2024 ballot to be added to the MD State Constitution and his support for the new Cannabis legislation among other accomplishments that benefit Montgomery County municipalities and Marylanders.
