City of Gaithersburg – Flags of Our Heroes – Opening Celebration

Formal Opening Ceremony Saturday May 27, 2023 at 11am
Location: Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm (next to Gaithersburg High School), 512 S. Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD 20877
Flags For Our Heroes celebrates our heroes, living and deceased, in a touching tribute to the people who mean the most to us. Every Memorial Day weekend since 2014, a Field of Honor located at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg, Maryland shimmers with more than 750 8-foot-high American flags fluttering in the gently warming Spring breezes. The flags are sponsored by corporations and individuals who want to honor their heroes. Each flag bears the name of the sponsor and the sponsor’s hero on a beautiful medallion. The medallions are then returned to be kept as mementos for the sponsors or their honorees. The flag display, which is lit at night, can be enjoyed 24 hours a day.

City of Gaithersburg – Memorial Day Observance

Loyalty and patriotism will be on full display as the City joins the nation in honoring all who have given their lives in military service at its Memorial Day Observance. The public is invited to join the Mayor and City Council, Junior Mayor, City staff and honored guests in a tribute to those of all generations who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Joining the observance will be guest speaker Lieutenant Colonel Larry D. Williams (retired). Christman Park, named for Lt. William J. Christman III, a Gaithersburg resident who was killed in Vietnam. This year’s Grand Marshal is Stephen P. Johnson, a historian at the Department of Defense’s POW/MIA Accounting Agency, where he works to provide the fullest possible records and accounting of missing personnel to their families and the nation. Montgomery County government posted the holiday schedule for Monday, May 29 in observance of Memorial Day:
- County offices – Closed.
- MC 311– Closed.
- Public Libraries – Closed Sunday, May 28, and Monday, May 29.
- County liquor stores – All stores open 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
- County-operated COVID-19 vaccination and testing centers – Closed. (The County no longer is operating PCR testing clinics.) Vaccine clinics closed on May 29.
- Department of Permitting Services – All offices, including the customer service lobby, will be closed.
- Ride On – Will operate a Sunday schedule which can be viewed at RideOnBus.com.
- Ride On extRa and Flex – not in service.
