Dr. Yngvild Olsen, Chairman of MedChi-The Maryland State Medical Society, joins host Dr. David Doman on this episode of Housecall to discuss the Opioid Crisis. MedChi is part of the Opioid Operational Command Center located at the Governor’s Office and has a spectrum of organizations that need to be involved. It is not just an Opioid Crisis it has become a polysubstance abuse crisis. Starting with Opioids then Heroin, Cocaine, Methamphetamine, and it goes on to other psycho stimulants that are prescribed. Opioid Overdoses is up 25% in Montgomery County and 19% in Maryland. Now Heroin has disappeared and been replaced with the very deadly Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid analgesic that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. You have to treat your addiction, whatever it may be and understand the consequences first. It’s important to have a system in place to handle whatever life brings you. Addiction is a Chronic Brain Disease, but you can live a productive life in recovery with an Addictive personality if you seek proper help and assistance. Dr. Olsen also delves into her views on legalizing Cannabis and how to fix the problems foreseen with the current system.
