On this episode of Housecall with Dr. David Doman, he is joined by guest Dr. Annie Kopera, Internal Medicine Resident Physician with Medstar Georgetown University Hospital.
Dr. Doman and Dr. Kopera discuss their collaboration with a team of gastroenterology fellows with Georgetown Medical center, faculty member Dr. Mark Mattar, and Dr. Doman’s colleague, Dr. Raena Olson to write a paper summarizing the possibility that depression may be connected to the gut microbiome.
According to their paper, “Depression and the Aberrant Intestinal Microbiome,” depression is one of the most common mental health disorders affecting adults in the United States. While the usual treatment is the combination of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, there is new evidence linking gut microbiome dysregulation to the development of depression.
