Following pushback on the Montgomery County Planning Board’s 2024 Attainable Housing proposal, Montgomery County council members have introduced a new, more targeted approach. Andrew Friedson (D-Dist.1) and Natali Fani-González (D-Dist. 6) recently unveiled the More Housing N.O.W. (New Options for Workers) plan to combat the county’s housing crisis. This legislative package would:
- allow more residential building types along corridors with a workforce housing requirement.
- convert highly vacant commercial properties to residential use.
- and double the county’s investment in the Homeowner Assistance Program from $4 million to $8 million in FY26.
Council members are once again opening up the housing discussion at Town Halls over the coming weeks, followed by a Public Hearing on March 11.
- February 27 – Town Hall at Wheaton High School (register), 6-8PM
- March 3 – Town Hall at the Kensington Town Hall (virtual option on Zoom), 7-8:30PM
- March 6 – Informational Session at Rockville High School Cafeteria (register), 7-8:30PM
- March 5 – Virtual Town Hall (Zoom), 7-8:30PM
- March 11 – Public Hearing (signup to testify here), 1:30PM
