Montgomery County Public Library and Friends of the Library are celebrating Pride Month!!!
Anita Vassallo, Director of Montgomery County Public Library (MCPL) hosted for the first time a virtual Contemporary Conversations with moderator and Montgomery County’s first openly Gay Councilmember, Evan Glass. Hear from Claire Rudy Foster, a nonbinary trans author who’s book Shine of Ever was “one of the Best LGBTQ books of the year” by Oprah Magazine, founder of Lambda Rising a iconic LGBTQ bookstore and one of Montgomery County’s own sage local librarians, Deacon Maccubbin, and Tyrese Coleman, A Proud Black Woman, Writer, Wife, Mother, and Attorney who writes about Black Womanhood.
Literature and books reflects and shapes our society. Having LGBTQ+ characters, authors, and icons helps portray us in literature and media who we can relate to. This is especially critical for the youth. To see ones own thoughts and selves in mass media is important in developing ones self and to teach and show our world who we are. Evan Glass heads the panel and Foster, Deacon, and Tyrese shares their experiences with LGBTQ+ contemporary life in the Washington Metropolitan area.
Friends of the Library promotes lifelong learning in Montgomery County and provides supplemental funding, programs, and materials and equipment to MCPL to augment public funding. As an independent nonprofit, FOLMC has operated for over 35 years without relying on government funding; it is not part of Montgomery County Government or MCPL.
