On March 11th Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles hosted a Women’s History Month Event at AFI Silver Theatre. This years national theme is Celebrating Women who tell our stories. This event, Women Who Tell Our Stories, Tell Their Stories featured a panel of trailblazing women in media. These women included Jenn White Host, 1A Podcast NPR, Andrea Sarralde Reporter, Montgomery Community Media, Jordan Lindsay Reporter, County Cable Montgomery, and Suzanne Pollak Reporter, Montgomery Community Media. As we carry on from generations of women before us who had to strife, protest, vote, and much more to insure the rights we have or recently had.
Women have been and continue to be misrepresented by the media. Media is far from balanced and the majority of media portray women as homemakers, models, or victims. Women are more likely than men to be referred to, in terms as superficial attributes such as appearance, age, clothes, and marital status. This is heard about Women running for office.
Men running for office are more likely to be portrayed as powerful public figures in the media. Focusing on profession, skills, and opinion. Perpetuating a limited, unequal misrepresentation of gender.
