Many people wonder why Hispanic Heritage month starts in the middle of September. This timing of the celebration is significant. September 15th marks the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
According to the U.S. Census, Montgomery County has 17.9% Hispanics, the largest percentage of Hispanics in Maryland. 28.8% of Montgomery County’s students are Hispanic and 10% of Montgomery County’s businesses are Hispanic owned, compared to 5% in the entire state. We have many reason to celebrate our Heritage here in Montgomery County!
I know I am a proud Chicana who enjoys showcasing all the Hispanic diversity in Montgomery County during this month, but I am fortunate too all throughout the year with our show Qué Pasa and Community Events we cover throughout the year. I was fortunate to have attended Montgomery College’s 2022 Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff as a guest, not behind a camera. I was entertained by some talented students who sang and danced beautifully, I had amazing food & delicious desserts, and got to her from Hispanics and Latin leaders of the college, who spoke passionately, from their hearts sharing their heritage pride and celebration with us all. It was a splendid evening! There is many events happening on campus and across Montgomery County, so learn and have fun regardless if your Hispanic or not! Enjoy Hispanic Heritage Month!
