The state of Maryland just recently passed a new law that increases the fine for passing a stopped school bus to $500. This regulation just went into effect a few weeks ago increasing the fine for drivers who get caught for failing to stop for a school bus when its red lights are flashing and children are being loaded or unloaded. It also establishes the fine for drivers who are ticketed by the school bus stop-arm cameras to $250.
Montgomery County Police report that during the 2018 to 2019 school year, 51,000 drivers risked the safety of school children. Law enforcement officers hope that this newly passed legislation will help keep students getting on and off the bus, safe.
