Disability is something most people don’t like to think about, but the chances that you’ll become disabled probably are greater than you realize. Studies show that a 20-year-old worker has a 1-in-4 chance of becoming disabled before reaching full retirement age. Social Security pays benefits to more than 64 million people, and out of those 64 million people, 8.1 million people are receiving disability benefits that in average is $1,236 a month. In addition, more than 1.6 million dependents that include spouses and children of disabled workers receive a monthly benefit.
