In an effort to bring the latest information and resources to local residents during the Covid-19 pandemic, Montgomery County’s Public, Education and Government (PEG) channels have combined resources to launch the Corona Montgomery channel. This new channel connects community members to accurate, critical and timely information about county and community services, programs and other useful news. It also creates a direct communications channel to residents who do not have access to hi-speed internet and technology and leverages family time and connections during this pandemic.
In its initial launch, Corona Montgomery is airing critical Covid-19-related information from multiple County agencies and municipalities to keep residents informed, safe and healthy. The second phase of this collaboration will feature virtual community content that is being created by businesses, nonprofit organizations, educators, students and performance artists to reach even more residents while Maryland’s stay-at-home order is in effect.
The programming is available on channel 10 on Comcast, Verizon and RCN.
“Residents are spending more time than ever before watching television because of the stay-at-home order,” said Council President Sidney Katz. “Corona Montgomery is a terrific way for community members to get information that directly impacts their lives during this uncertain time.”
Also as part of this effort, an around-the-clock, online channel has been created. Coronamontgomery.info provides links to important Covid-19 resources for county residents and showcases a live feed of the Corona Montgomery channel. In addition, various segments are provided in Spanish and other languages.
Councilmember Nancy Navarro, who serves as chair of the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee said, “Providing timely information to our residents in a culturally competent way has been a top priority for me throughout my tenure on the Council. This effort has become critically important during the Covid-19 global pandemic. The new channel will expand on the work of the multicultural communications team that I spearheaded with Councilmember Albornoz and County Executive Elrich. This type of collaboration among our local cable operators should serve as a model for disseminating essential information about county government resources and community services during this pandemic and beyond.”
Corona Montgomery was spearheaded by Montgomery College Television in partnership with the Montgomery County Council. All of the partners in the Connect Montgomery Alliance are providing content for the channel including County Cable Montgomery (CCM), Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), Montgomery Community Media (MCM), Montgomery Municipal Cable (MMC), the City of Rockville and the City of Takoma Park.
“Montgomery College’s MCTV is thrilled to play a critical role in keeping the community informed during this challenging time,” said Dr. DeRionne Pollard, president of Montgomery College. “It’s a natural extension of a role as educators and civically engaged partners in the County.”
The PEG Network/Connect Montgomery Alliance consists of local cable access operators who provide trusted information about government, schools and the arts for Montgomery County residents.
