What were The Stonewall Riots?
Fifty years ago, during the early morning hours of June 28th, 1969, a gay bar in New York City called The Stonewall Inn was raided by the New York police, and was followed by days of rebellion where protesters and police clashed. Today, this event is seen as the start of the gay civil rights movement, but gay activists and organizations were standing up to harassment and discrimination years before.
“Before Stonewall” is a documentary that investigates the national and cultural perceptions of homosexuality before the riots, they reveal the dramatic and somewhat horrifying experiences of LGBT Americans dating all the way back to the early 1900s. Experience the fascinating and unforgettable, decade-by-decade history of homosexuality in America through eye-opening historical footage and amazing interviews with those who lived through an often brutal closeted history.
