Clinical Psychologist, Sharon B. Spiegel, PhD, ABPP shares her expertise on this episode of Housecall with host, Dr. David Doman, as a professional and member of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH). Clinical Hypnosis is an altered state of awareness, perception or consciousness in which the mind is focused. Your attention and concentration are at a higher level, which enables you to respond to suggestion used, by licensed and trained professionals. It is a highly relaxed state and in such a state, you can respond to suggestions and can use suggestions in service of the changes you desire within reason.
What makes Hypnosis effective is not the state of Hypnosis, but the work you do in the hypnotic state. Hypnosis is like an empty syringe, it depends what is in it to know what the effect will be. There is an overlap between Transcendental Meditation, Guided Imagery, and Hypnosis. The main difference is the goal orientation. In Clinical Hypnosis you are setting goals to achieve. There is always a treatment plan and you add hypnosis if this line of treatment is successful. When the goal needs to be sustained Self Hypnosis is very useful. It is possible to sink deeper into our mind and rewrite or reprogram our subconscious.
The biggest misconceptions of Clinical Hypnosis are:
- Its like sleep
- You are under someone else’s control
- You can get stuck in trance
Clinical Hypnosis helps to lower anxiety levels. By learning an altered state of consciousness, deep breathing, and/or self comforting, people can reduce their anxiety down significantly. Hypnosis helps in giving greater confidence.
Health Benefits of Hypnosis:
- Anxiety
- Insomnia, Trouble Sleeping, Sleep Walking
- Hot Flashes during Menopause
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Chronic Pain
- Quit Smoking
- Weight Loss
- TMJ- The Temporomandibular Joint
- Prep for Procedures
Hypnosis can be good for validating the memory not recalling a suppressed memory. Like someone hiding jewelry and forgetting where it’s located, Hypnosis could help with this problem.
Hypnosis Is Not Beneficial:
- Alcohol Addiction
- Drug Addiction
- Memory Recall

I HAVE TREATED ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTIONS WITH HYPNOSIS-BASED EGO STATE THERAPY, IN SWEDEN, BECAUSE HYPNOSIS ALONE WAS NOT REACHING THE PART OF THE PATIENT THAT URGED FOR THE DRUG, BUT EST DOES. GRODON EMERSON I AUSTRALIA HAS THE SAME EXPERIENCE. // LIC PSYCHOLOGIST SUSANNA CAROLUSSON
Hypnosis is a natural altered state of mind that allows rapid change in the subconscious. It changes the “Yes But…”of the conscious mind into “Why Not.” It is probably the best way to treat anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder and irritable bowel syndrome.
