Is that call from Social Security? Really?
Social Security phone frauds are the number one type of fraud reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Last year, the Office of Inspector General received 478,000 reports of fraud calls up to November 2019 and people report losing millions of dollars.
Callers claim that there is a problem with your Social Security number and your number will be deleted; or that you have a problem with your Social Security benefits and we will stopped them, or that they have a COVID-19 vaccine or home test kit they will send to you. Please do not believe those callers!
Social Security representatives may call you when you for several reasons: If you are applying for benefits and we need more information or documentation, or if you are receiving benefits and we are reviewing those benefits to ensure you are still eligible to receive them. The difference between a fraud call and a real call from Social Security is that our representatives will never your ask you to do a money transfer or to send a gift card, and we will never tell you the police will come and arrest you.
Social Security continues working with Department of Justice and other federal agencies to stop scammers. You can help us! First, Be Aware and do not respond to any unsolicited calls, and is you respond: HANG UP! In addition, report the call immediately to the office of Inspector General at www.socialsecurity.gov or by calling 1-800-269-0271. Stay safe!
